Structure and texture are intimately connected; their story of becoming is the story of a reciprocal relationship guided by the tension-filled integrity of all life processes.
Embryology provides us with valuable insights into how a complex living body comes to be. It suggests that we are formed through a continuous process of folding and unfolding. This shaping process starts from a single tissue that allows for a high degree of specialization.
The tissue of bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons, organs, etc., the way they are formed, the way they are embedded, nested or coiled and interwoven, gives rise to the idea of wholeness, of the unity of the living human body.
In principle, all living structures have integrity and wholeness. The question is how well developed it is, and that depends on how well we can shape and refine our awareness and communication with the different parts and systems of the body.
However, no biological system, no living human being exists apart from the forces of nature. Our relationship to gravity and the limits that every form inherently embodies can greatly aid us in our search for "architextural" integrity. During the workshop, you will likely perceive gravity and boundaries not only as limitation, but also as an innate opportunity for infinite creativity and unhindered energy exchange.
In practice, we will alternate between sensitive explorations, dynamic experiments, dance patterns, laboratory processes and theoretical insights.
Drawing on the principles of the Axis Syllabus and the Feldenkrais method, Sadhana and Loïc continue through this workshop their collaboration and their research around the concept of Ecology of the Moving Body, i.e., the possibility of living as a dynamic ecosystem and to cultivate the living in us and in our interactions.
TEACHERS
Sadhana Fichtner
Sadhana began studying dance in 2001, shortly after seeing an amazing dance performance that showed her the power and beauty of a dancing body. Since then, learning and exploring the art of dance has become her life's journey. However, the pivotal event for her dance development occurred ten years later when she came across the inspiring research community of Axis Syllabus. From that point on, Sadhana's understanding of the human body in movement has fundamentally changed. In 2018, she was accepted as a candidate into the Teacher Training Program. Since then, she is in the process of becoming a certified Axis Syllabus teacher. Sadhana currently teaches the perspective and principles of Axis Syllabus to aspiring dancers and movement enthusiasts in Berlin and abroad.
Movement educator, Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner since 2008. For 25 years, Loïc has been questioning and teaching the use of the moving body in a wide variety of contexts and for a wied variety of audiences. His experience is forged/he developed his experience through the practice of performing arts, martial arts, meditation. He organizes and co-hosts numerous training sessions, notably with Blandine Calais-Germain, Michel Raji, Vincent Rouche, Frey Faust, etc. Today, his involvement in the community of researchers of the Axis Syllabus offers him a place / opens up a space of stimulation, exchanges and practice which contributes to his research around the concept of Ecology of the Body in Motion. He develops his practice in Besançon and teaches in various training courses in France and abroad. He also accompanies artists in their personal practices and creative processes.
Loïc Deschamps
The common point between Axis Syllabus (AS) and the Feldenkrais Method (MF) is that both propose a research framework about human movement aiming at/focussing on autonomy in learning and responsibility towards one's own body. They also share a conception of “organic” movement detached from social or cultural injunctions, beliefs, or aesthetic considerations.
The Feldenkrais method
Created by Moshe Feldenkrais (1904-1984), and pioneer in the field of somatic education, the Feldenkrais method is defined as a pedagogy of the lived body / embodied self at the service of knowledge and self-development. It offers processes aimed at sharpening self-perception and expanding the scope of our automatic organizations of movement. The person is seen as an ecosystem that we seek to balance by promoting their self-regulation capacities. By questioning our habits (often unconscious), the practice makes it possible to integrate other movement procedures, more organic, less wearing, and engages in other ways of looking at ourselves and our relationship to the world.
Axis Syllabus is a collection of information about the limits and potentials of human locomotion. This rich source of information draws on numerous fields of science including anatomy, physics, biology, embryology, biomechanics, etc. Being informed is the cornerstone of making an intelligent decision when choosing a movement practice. Although we humans have all evolved unique body architecture, there are commonalities in form, structure and function due to the laws of nature to which we are all equally subject. These commonalities provide us with a reference point to develop a deeper understanding of the moving body in space and time. Axis Syllabus provides observation and exploration tools, proposes strategies, and offers a unique perspective on how we can improve our movement skills to feel resilient and self-empowered in our individual learning. Its originator Frey Faust is a brilliant dancer, choreographer, teacher and the author of the book “The Axis Syllabus” Human Movement Lexicon. His wisdom and unique perspectives on the living human body in motion are visionary and ground-breaking. His indispensable efforts to educate and critically engage are a powerful inspiration to all who aspire to a self-determined life.
